How are you SERVING your followers? What does this look like? Why should you do it? I’ve got all these answers, AND some FREE IDEAS if you’re needing a place to start.
W H Y ? Serving your followers does a couple things beneath the surface:
1. It removes the gatekeeping! What a breath of fresh air for a business or organization to actually give away a sample of what sets them apart. You don’t have to give away the secret sauce, but your audience will appreciate a glimpse into something you are an expert in, that they can readily apply or use in THEIR business or life.
2. Happy thoughts! Research supports the science behind the happy thoughts associated with FREE! Receiving a gift and merely the anticipation of a FREE gift releases dopamine - the neurotransmitter that is triggered when HAPPY things happen. This association can last longer than you realize. Remember that free umbrella from that cell phone company that wasn’t yours? Guess who you’ll think about the next time you’re unhappy with your service. Positivity leaves an imprint on the brain, and your generosity will do the same, even if you don’t see an immediate sale or impact.
H O W ? It’s easier than you think:
How you can serve will vary based on your industry, but at the core - give what you can afford to literally and figuratively. Do you have extra inventory you need to part with? Is there a step in your services you can offer free of cost for followers? Do you have tips, checklists, or personal observations that years of experience have taught you? All of these are examples of things you can afford to GIVEAWAY!
Inventory giveaways give folks a sample of your product and what they can expect if they do business with you.
A free consultation/quote/audit/convenience offers an immediate exclusivity attached to a transaction - you’re someone who cares about THEM too and not just the deal.
Knowledge giveaways give folks a glimpse at the professional they could work with, who’s not afraid to share knowledge.

Do this exercise with me, ok? Grab a piece of paper or open a note on your computer. Write down 3 pieces of advice you’d give someone interested in the goods or services you provide. BOOM. You just wrote down 3 ways to serve your followers. If you are a realtor, you likely have tips for homebuyers, do’s and don’ts for an open house, trending paint colors, etc. If you sell cell phones, you likely know the apps that use the most storage, habits that are battery-drainers, or the best ways to clean a screen. These tips and industry knowledge you’ve gained over time cost you nothing, BUT can be incredibly beneficial to the person not knowing where to start or how to do the thing you’re good at.
